Scaling removes stains sitting on the outside of your teeth, such as stains from tea, coffee, tobacco, and tartar. Bleaching works differently ,it uses a whitening agent to lighten the colour of the tooth and can improve some stains that are inside the tooth. However, deeper stains, such as severe fluorosis or tetracycline staining, may not respond well to bleaching and may need other treatments.
Intrinsic and Extrinsic stains
- Extrinsic: The stains are on the outer tooth surface. The most common causes of extrinsic stains include : tea ,coffee ,wine ,tobacco ,smoking ,vaping.
- Intrinsic. This type of stain is located within the tooth. It appears as grayish or yellow. Intrinsic stains are caused by medications ,trauma to the tooth structure ,aging ,excessive fluoride intake.
- Maintain good oral hygiene: Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and use an appropriate brushing technique.
- Clean between the teeth: Daily flossing or interdental cleaning helps prevent plaque accumulation.
- Limit staining substances: Reduce frequent consumption of tea, coffee, tobacco, and other strongly pigmented foods and beverages .
- Rinse with water: Rinsing the mouth with water after consuming tea, coffee, or coloured foods can help reduce pigment retention.
- Avoid tobacco products: Smoking and tobacco chewing are significant contributors to tooth discoloration and can also adversely affect oral health.
