Wisdom-tooth pain: What should I do?

Written by Dr. Shalu, BDS · Last updated September 2026

  1. 1

    Symptom

A deep ache at the back of the mouth, swollen gum over a partly through tooth, jaw stiffness, or a bad taste after meals.

  2. 2

    Possible causes

The tooth erupting through the gum (short-lived) · Food and bacteria trapped under a gum flap (pericoronitis) · Decay on the wisdom tooth or the molar in front · An impacted tooth pressing on its neighbour

  3. 3

    What you can do

Rinse with warm salt water after every meal · Use a small soft brush to clean as far back as you can · Short-term pain relief as directed; a cold pack on the cheek for swelling · Stay upright and rest if the jaw feels stiff

  4. 4

    When to see a dentist

Within a few days if pain keeps returning. The same day if you cannot open your mouth, have facial swelling, fever, or trouble swallowing. An X-ray decides whether cleaning and time are enough, or whether the tooth should come out.
