Is gum swelling normal?

Mild, generalised puffiness along several teeth often goes with gingivitis and improves with better cleaning. Local swelling over one tooth, a gum boil (a small pimple on the gum), or a face that looks lopsided is a different story - that can be an abscess.

Hormonal changes (including pregnancy) can also make gums look swollen. Food stuck under the gum, a wisdom-tooth flap, or an ill-fitting denture are other everyday causes.

Seek care promptly if

• The swelling is painful, growing, or you have a fever
• It is becoming hard to swallow, speak, or open your mouth
• Your eyelid or neck is involved

Do not try to lance a swelling at home. Salt-water rinses and a cold compress can comfort you on the way to a dentist.
